The San Francisco 49ers currently hold the second overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. 49ers general manager John Lynch has skillfully positioned the Niners to trade their first-round selection by increasing the value of the No. 2 pick.

For a rookie front-office type, 49ers GM John Lynch has handled the buildup to the 2017 NFL Draft like a seasoned veteran.

What are the 49ers’ plans for the No. 2 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft?

The rumors have been plentiful. Various reports claim the 49ers are strongly leaning toward each of the top-15 potential overall selections, including ones that have raised a few eyebrows.

The 49ers are strongly considering a quarterback, but are also perfectly happy with the quarterbacks on their roster.

The Niners are “open for business” to trade back, but they’ve also narrowed down their selection to a couple of select players. Meanwhile, they’re also “antsy to trade” the pick away, but only if they receive full value for the pick.

A portion of the information has come directly from Lynch, but the majority of the recent reports cite leaks and anonymous sources within or close to the organization.

Sounds far too familiar.

The 49ers have a recent history of detrimental media leaks by the front office, but this year, the purpose of the leaks is different. Instead of using the media to attack individuals within the organization, Lynch is using the media to attack opponents by masking the 49ers’ true intentions, and thus raising the potential trade value of the No. 2 pick.

The one thing we know about the 49ers’ draft plan is we don’t know anything.

And that’s just the way Lynch wants it.

What is the 49ers’ No. 2 Pick in the 2017 NFL Draft really worth? In order to answer that question, we need to first learn a bit about the history of draft trade strategy.
