It might all depend on whether Lance is healthy or not

The 49ers fell 30-18 to the Colts for many of the same reasons they fell to the Packers, Seahawks, and Cardinals. Penalties. Turnovers. Failed third-down conversions. Wash, rinse, repeat.

San Francisco went 1 for 11 on third downs, with the lone conversion coming in the third quarter. The offense turned the football over four times. The quarterback himself was responsible for three of those turnovers with two picks and a fumble. After the game, Kyle Shanahan was asked if Jimmy Garoppolo would be the starting quarterback next week against the Bears.

“I would guess so, yeah,” Shanahan said, “I’m going to watch this tape and see if guys are healthy, first of all. I don’t even know where our guys are at. It was good for Jimmy to be able to get healthy enough to play in this game today.”

When asked about the quarterback situation a second time later in the press conference, Shanahan responded:

“I got a whole team to worry about. I’m not just thinking about the quarterback situation right now. I’m going to evaluate everything, see where our team is out, see what gives us the best chance to beat Chicago, and see what our options are. That’s what you go into each week, finding out your options. we had two quarterbacks who were hurting this week. Jimmy was able to come back and play, we’ll see if Trey can next week. Still not sure yet, but I’ve got a lot of things to figure out.”

With a fourth straight loss putting the team at 2-4 on the year and the Bears, Cardinals, and Rams coming up – that’s the understatement of the year.
