After making their additions in free agency, the 49ers would have 22 capable starters on both sides of the ball if they had to play a game on Sunday. That means they don’t have to pigeonhole their plans for the NFL draft starting April 26.

But San Francisco still has areas that need upgrades for the future. They have four selections in the first three rounds, and used those picks to address key areas moving forward in the latest three-round mock from our friends at Draft Wire.

Let’s take a look at those choices and how they would fit the 49ers.

Round 1 (pick 9) | Roquan Smith | LB | Georgia

Smith is the most polished inside linebacker in the draft and also one of the most athletic. At 6-foot-1, 236 pounds, he has the sideline-to-sideline range and coverage ability that make him an ideal prospect for the modern, pass-happy NFL.

The 49ers might seriously consider adding a linebacker with a premium selection regardless of Reuben Foster’s shaky status going forward. Foster, of course, has been arrested twice since his promising rookie campaign ended, including once for alleged domestic violence, and could be facing criminal charges and/or a lengthy suspension to begin 2018.

An incoming rookie could ostensibly replace Foster during that suspension and play beside him if and when he returns. Veteran Malcolm Smith is expected to start this season, but might be a cap casualty in 2019 when he’s due a $5.45 million cap hit. Roquan Smith could be the long-term replacement and offer San Francisco another elite player in the middle of the defense.
